What is netiquette?
The term «netiquette» is a portmanteau combining «net» for internet and «etiquette» for social manners. Netiquette can be seen as an etiquette guide or code of conduct for the internet. It sets out rules for communication online, for posting on platforms such as Facebook and X, in various other forums, or more broadly across social media as a whole (also referred to as social networks).
Code of conduct for virtual communication
Netiquette, which sets out the code of conduct for electronic communication, is intended to ensure respectful interaction during virtual communication. As it is quite common for online exchanges to occur between people who do not know each other, it is all the more important to observe recognised and expected forms of politeness. Although not legally binding, netiquette is strongly recommended here as a guideline for courteous behaviour.
Our expectations in the context of our presence on social mediaWith regard to our online presence on the various social media platforms, we expect interaction to take place in a courteous and respectful manner. Above all, we do not tolerate comments or posts that
- contain offensive, racist, discriminatory, pornographic, degrading, inhuman, threatening, or illegal content,
- glorify or incite violence,
- violate copyrights, personal rights, or other rights of third parties,
- spread advertising or fake news.
We also do not want our online presence to be used for personal advertising. References to personal websites or goods and services offered are likewise not permitted.
Consequences of inappropriate and undesired behaviour
Copyright and data protection laws also apply on the internet. The upload of copyrighted files and/or the publication of personal data of third parties is not permitted on our online presence. Any violations of copyright or data protection law will be removed by us, and the personal data of third parties will be anonymised or completely deleted for their protection.
If we detect inappropriate or undesired behaviour, the post in question will be removed from our online presence without prior warning or notice, regardless of its form or content. Such behaviour may also have civil or criminal consequences for the individual concerned and may be reported accordingly. We reserve the right to act at our discretion and without prior warning, and to involve and inform other authorities or official bodies if necessary. Repeated inappropriate or undesired behaviour will result in users being permanently denied access to our online presence.
Data processing and your data protection rights
With regard to the processing of your personal data, including the deletion and transfer of your data to third parties (see above, «Consequences»), we refer you to our privacy policy at www.regierung.li, as well as general information on data protection – in particular your rights – in the privacy policy of the Liechtenstein National Administration.
Our intention and our communication via social media
We primarily use online platforms to provide information about our activities. This information is usually also available outside of social media. There is therefore no intention to engage in dialogue. However, it is permissible for dialogue to take place in relation to our posts without our involvement, in which case the above rules of etiquette apply.
Various ways to contact us are indicated on the website www.regierung.li and in our privacy policy.
